ADHD Screening Consultation, Psychological Formulation and Recommendations

A screening and psychological formulation, not a formal ADHD diagnosis.

Many people come to psychological therapy because they have spent years wondering why everyday life seems to require so much more effort than it appears to for others. You may have found yourself constantly trying to stay organised, missing deadlines despite your best intentions, feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks, or struggling to maintain focus even on things that matter to you. Perhaps you’ve always felt that you think differently from those around you but have never quite understood why.

For some people, these experiences can be explained by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the way the brain regulates attention, motivation, organisation, activity levels and emotional responses. Whilst ADHD presents differently from person to person, it can influence many aspects of daily life, including education, work, relationships and emotional wellbeing. At the same time, many people with ADHD describe strengths such as creativity, curiosity, adaptability and the ability to think in innovative ways.

Many people are not diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood, particularly if they have developed ways of masking or compensating for their difficulties over many years. Receiving an assessment can provide an opportunity to better understand yourself, make sense of longstanding experiences, and identify the strategies and support that are most likely to help you move forward.

Together, we will explore your current concerns, your personal history, and the strengths and challenges that have shaped your experiences. Whilst we will consider whether ADHD may be contributing to your difficulties, we will also think more broadly about other factors that may have influenced how you experience yourself and the world around you.

Rather than focusing solely on whether you meet diagnostic criteria, the aim of this consultation is to help you develop a better understanding of your experiences and identify practical ways forward.

Many people find that this consultation provides reassurance, clarity and a greater understanding of themselves, regardless of whether they decide to pursue a formal ADHD assessment. Some people leave feeling more confident that ADHD is likely to be relevant, whilst others discover that alternative explanations better account for their experiences. Either outcome can provide a valuable starting point for deciding what support may be most helpful.

The 90 minutes consultation includes

  • A psychological assessment, including a clinical ADHD screening
  • Exploration of your current concerns, experiences and strengths
  • Consideration of other factors that may be contributing to your difficulties
  • An individualised psychological formulation to help make sense of your experiences
  • Personalised recommendations tailored to your needs
  • Guidance about whether a comprehensive ADHD assessment may be appropriate
  • Guidance regarding the process of undertaking an ADHD assessment privately and through the NHS

This consultation may be particularly helpful if you

  • Are wondering whether ADHD could explain some of your experiences
  • Would like professional guidance before deciding whether to pursue a comprehensive assessment
  • Are looking for a psychological understanding of your difficulties, rather than a diagnosis alone
  • Would value personalised recommendations to help you decide on your next steps

Please note that this consultation is not a diagnostic assessment and does not result in a formal ADHD diagnosis. It cannot be used as evidence for educational, workplace or medical purposes. If a formal diagnosis is required, a comprehensive ADHD assessment would be necessary.
